about
A tribute to Eric Garner who died in the New York City borough of Staten Island after Daniel Pantaleo, an NYPD officer, put him in a chokehold while arresting him. With multiple officers restraining him, Garner repeated the words "I can't breathe" 11 times until Garner lost consciousness. Garner remained lying on the sidewalk for 7 minutes while the officers waited for an ambulance. Garner was pronounced dead at an area hospital approximately one hour later.
This song is a battle cry to those who couldn't and still cannot breathe. Carolyn Fe breathes 11 times in honor of Mr. Eric Garner.
Shut the door, don't throw away the key
Turn around, don't look, just drop down to your knees
No time to think about your sorry next of kin
It's a permanent decision based on the color of your skin
CHORUS
Black or white, don't matter what you've seen
Brown, yellow, pink 'n red, don't care what they mean
Unsaid, misled, stopped dead, misread, give 'em some lead
It's a broken connection, an impulse
I can't breathe
I can't breathe
I don't understand the way it has to be
It's a sad solution for the human color scheme
A devolution for a quick substitution
A writ of execution for the counter-revolution
CHORUS
I can't breathe, I'm pinned underneath
This heavy weight bequeathed by their official sheathes
Garner, Chambers, Brown and Crawford too
These friends they tell me I need to give this to you
CHORUS
I need to breathe
Let me breathe
I want to breathe
I will breathe
